Matched Betting
A technique that uses free bets and promotions offered by sportsbooks to generate guaranteed profit by mathematically hedging all outcomes.
How It Works
Matched betting exploits sportsbook sign-up bonuses and ongoing promotions. You place a qualifying bet at the sportsbook, then lay (bet against) the same outcome on a betting exchange. This cancels out risk on the qualifying bet, unlocking the free bet which you then convert into cash using the same back/lay technique.
Practical Example
A sportsbook offers “Bet $50, Get $50 Free Bet”:
Step 1, Qualifying Bet:
- Back Team A at the sportsbook: $50 at 2.00 (even money)
- Lay Team A on the exchange: $50 at 2.02
- Net loss: ~$1 (the small exchange commission)
Step 2, Free Bet Conversion:
- Use $50 free bet on an underdog at 5.00 (sportsbook)
- Lay the same outcome on exchange at 5.10
- Free bet wins: you profit $200 minus lay liability
- Free bet loses: you collect from the exchange
Guaranteed profit: ~$38 from a $50 free bet (76% conversion rate)
