Betting Exchange
A platform where bettors bet against each other rather than against a bookmaker, allowing users to both back (bet for) and lay (bet against) outcomes..
How It Works
A betting exchange acts as a marketplace connecting bettors with opposing views. Instead of a bookmaker setting odds and taking the other side, users set their own odds and wait for someone to match them. The exchange takes a small commission (2-5%) on winning bets rather than building a margin into the odds.
This creates two roles:
- Backers, Bet that an outcome will happen (like a traditional bet)
- Layers, Bet that an outcome won’t happen (acting as the bookmaker)
Practical Example
On Betfair Exchange for a tennis match:
- You want to back Djokovic at 1.80 for $200
- Another user wants to lay Djokovic at 1.80 for $200
The exchange matches you. If Djokovic wins:
- You (backer) profit: $160 minus 2% commission = $156.80
- Layer loses: $160
If Djokovic loses:
- Layer profits: $200 minus 2% commission = $196
- You (backer) lose: $200
The exchange earns commission from the winner regardless of outcome.
Why It Matters for Bettors
Exchanges offer several advantages over traditional sportsbooks:
- Better odds, No bookmaker margin means odds are typically 10-20% better than sportsbooks
- Lay betting, The ability to bet against outcomes enables matched betting, trading, and hedging strategies
- No account limits, Exchanges don’t restrict winning bettors since they profit from commission, not losses
- In-play trading, Back and lay at different prices to lock in profit as odds move during events
Exchange vs. Sportsbook
| Exchange | Sportsbook | |
|---|---|---|
| Odds set by | Users | Bookmaker |
| Revenue model | Commission on wins | Built-in margin (vig) |
| Lay betting | Yes | No |
| Account limits | No | Yes (for winners) |
| Typical odds | Better by 10-20% | Worse due to vig |
