Steam Move
A sudden, significant line movement caused by sharp bettors (syndicates) placing large wagers simultaneously across multiple sportsbooks, indicating.
How It Works
A steam move occurs when betting syndicates, groups of professional bettors, coordinate to place large bets at the same time across many sportsbooks. This simultaneous action causes rapid, widespread line movement that’s difficult for books to react to individually. The term “steam” refers to the momentum of the line shift, like a steamroller moving through the market.
Practical Example
At 2:00 PM, an NFL line sits at:
- Patriots -3 (-110) across all major sportsbooks
At 2:05 PM, sharp syndicates hit Patriots -3 simultaneously at 15+ books:
- Pinnacle moves to Patriots -3.5 (-105)
- Circa moves to Patriots -3.5 (-110)
- BetMGM moves to Patriots -4 (-110)
- DraftKings moves to Patriots -3.5 (-115)
Within 5 minutes, the line moved 0.5 to 1 full point. Any bettor who grabbed Patriots -3 before the steam move now holds significant Closing Line Value.
Why It Matters for Bettors
Steam moves represent the strongest signal in sports betting markets. They indicate that the sharpest, most well-funded bettors in the world have identified an edge. Following steam moves can be profitable because:
- Information advantage, Syndicates often have access to injury news, weather data, or model outputs before the general market
- Line value, Getting in before or during a steam move means you’re betting at odds that will soon disappear
- Market efficiency, After a steam move, the new line is typically more accurate than the old one
However, blindly chasing steam can be dangerous. By the time you see the move, the value may already be gone.
How to Spot Steam Moves
- Lines move 0.5+ points in under 10 minutes
- Movement happens simultaneously across 5+ sportsbooks
- The move occurs at a sharp book first (Pinnacle, Circa)
- Reverse movement (correction) doesn’t follow
