Bankroll Management
The practice of managing your betting funds to maximize long-term growth while minimizing the risk of going broke, using staking strategies like Kelly.
Why It Matters
Even with a proven edge, poor bankroll management can lead to ruin. Variance in sports betting is brutal, a bettor with a 55% win rate can easily hit 15-game losing streaks. Without proper staking, one bad run wipes out months of profit. Bankroll management ensures you survive the inevitable downswings and stay in the game long enough for your edge to compound.
Common Staking Methods
Flat Betting
Wager the same fixed percentage (typically 1-3%) of your starting bankroll on every bet.
- Pros: Simple, consistent, low variance
- Cons: Doesn’t account for varying edge sizes
Kelly Criterion
Wager a percentage proportional to your edge (see Kelly Criterion entry).
- Pros: Mathematically optimal growth rate
- Cons: Requires accurate probability estimates, high variance at full Kelly
Fractional Kelly
Use a fraction (typically 25-50%) of the full Kelly recommendation.
- Pros: Captures most of Kelly’s growth with far less volatility
- Cons: Slower growth than full Kelly
Practical Example
You have a $5,000 bankroll and a verified 3% edge on NFL sides:
| Method | Bet Size | 100-Bet Growth | Max Drawdown Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flat 2% | $100 | ~$300 profit | Low |
| Full Kelly | $150-$250 | ~$500 profit | High |
| Half Kelly | $75-$125 | ~$380 profit | Moderate |
With flat 2% betting, you’d need a catastrophic 50-game losing streak to lose your entire bankroll, statistically near-impossible with a real edge.
Key Principles
- Separate your bankroll, Never bet with money you can’t afford to lose. Your bankroll is a business investment, not spending money.
- Track everything, Log every bet with odds, stake, result, and closing line. You can’t manage what you don’t measure.
- Resize periodically, Adjust your unit size as your bankroll grows or shrinks (monthly is typical).
- Set stop-losses, If your bankroll drops 30-40%, pause and reassess your strategy before continuing.
